In this body of work I critique the stereotyping of identities, the commodification of marginalized cultural production, and the so-called “Asian American Exhibit”. Previously, I made a series of lithographs depicting the facades of famous art institutions, their promotional banners replaced with satirical commentary on the “Asian American Exhibit”. These banners are an expansion on that project, bringing them to life on real fabric. I use bright, confrontational colours and only typography to activate the space. The lines of text are satirical and ironic, highlighting the fetishization of Asian culture in the context of the art institution. My digital print compliments the banners. I sit for a photo, looking directly at the audience with a projected image and text over my face. The life-size scale, eye contact between subject and viewer, and use of projection prompts the viewer to consider their assumptions about me and expectations of what my art should look like based on my identity.
